With the great weather that we are having locally here in Grantham at Secure My Sale Estate Agents we look into the best way to protect your furniture from the baking sun !

Having garden furniture, like a rattan sofa or wooden table and chairs, is an excellent way to make your garden a more sociable, aesthetically pleasing space to relax in.

While warm, sunny days in the UK are a rarity, the constant UV rays your furniture absorbs during summer, even when the temperatures aren’t that high, can cause a fair amount of damage over time.

Plastic chairs can start to melt, rattan can crack or fade, and wooden furniture can become discoloured. This can make your once beautiful outdoor furniture look much less appealing, so it’s important to protect your garden accessories as best as you can.

In this article, we’ll share our top tips to help you protect your garden furniture from the sun and keep it looking its best for longer.

1. Fit Covers

One of the best ways to protect your outdoor furniture from the sun is to invest in some high-quality furniture covers. It’s the simplest and most effective way to shelter your furniture from all types of weather.

Most covers are easy to fit and simply slide over the top of tables and chairs. Or they can be clasped together using Velcro or a zip. This makes it easy to use your garden furniture during the hot weather, as you can easily unzip it or slip the covers off.

2. Add a Sealant

Wooden and metal furniture, like tables and garden chairs, can be most affected by hot weather. If it’s painted or stained, the constant UV rays in summer can easily cause the wood to fade or the paint to flake all over your patio.

Investing in a sealant to paint over your furniture can be a highly effective way to prevent damage on hot days. Depending on the sealant, you may even find it protects your furniture during heavy rainfall, too.

3. Put an Umbrella Up

Moving your garden furniture into the shade may sound like an obvious way to protect it from the sun. But it isn’t very convenient, especially if you like sitting out in the sun.

A quicker and easier way to protect your furniture from daily UV rays, as opposed to moving it around the garden on warm days, is to simply put up an outdoor umbrella.

If your table has an umbrella in the centre, or you have one in a stand nearby, opening this up on sunny days to cover your furniture can help protect it from melting, fading or cracking.

Provided you don’t have any strong winds in the forecast, you can easily keep the umbrella up during the whole summer to protect your furniture daily. That way, all you’ll need to do is put it down when you want to use the furniture and sit in the sun, of course!

Conclusion

Even though hot summer days in the UK and during this current heatwave, it’s important to make sure your garden furniture can handle the heat when those days come around. By taking these steps to protect your outdoor furniture, you can keep your garden looking great all year round!
